Optimistic Humanity

Random Thoughts:

-I’ve lost all hope in having a social life as a 20 year old…with that in mind I’m searching the internet for a birthday dress because after stopping by the H&M in Denver today I decided that all the other H&M’s in the country send last seasons clothes to Denver and say, “Here, maybe the hick Coloradoans won’t notice.” We notice.

“Australia’s multicultural chef’s fuse together European techniques and fresh Pacific Rim ingredients.  Mod Oz is what the locals call it.” -(my new) Lonely Planet Australia

Some things I feel I need before departure:

-Gold rings to go with my gold bracelet/earring obsession
-A stylin’ go-everywhere bag (can’t be borrowing Kristie’s everyday anymore…)
-Badass black, walk-able booties I can wear out!
-New one-piece
-I want something with a really cool american flag on it or just representing America…is that obnoxious? Well, I have to celebrate 4th of July somehow even if I am in the middle of the outback!!!
-Black leather jacket

“ELANA, YOU CRAZY YOU CANNOT BRING EVERYZING ZERE!!! AND YOU VILL BE SLEEPING VIS BOYS IN THE SAME ROOM AT ZE HOSTELS…VAT IF THEY DRINK TOO MUCH AND GET IN YOUR BED!!!!”

“This hostel is so cheap! Look like 12 beds in one room.”
“There vill be so many bugs in bed and disgusting toilet.”
“Can I buy spray to kill bed bugs???”
“Yes, Elana, make bag weigh more with spray for bed bugs.”

“When I visit grandma and grandpa I’m going to take grandpa to a chinese place.”
“He doesn’t like chinese.”
“Yes, he does…remember we used to go to that place in Iowa?”
“That place vas disgusting.”

“She dresses like she is handicapped.”
“Mama…THAT IS NOT A SAYING WHY DO YOU KEEP SAYING THAT HAHAHA”

Today at the gym, I fell off of this weird ab thing…all of the stay-at-home mom’s looked at me weird.

Also, today at the Russian store I walked around and read every single label like when you’re a little kid and learn to read and read everything you see aloud. I also made my mom buy every single thing I remembered eating when I was little.  I realized how much Russian-ness we have lost over the years…

Goodnight.

[Note: some mother-daughter convos were in Russian, those might have been slightly altered as direct translation is a little difficult but for the most part these quotes are real life.]

We are young.
We are free and full of life.
We hold each other close.
But we plan to go far.
This week stood still with
Hikes, random outings, beers and chaos.
I’m going to be far, far away from this place in my life by the time the sun sets today.
It’s been one hell of an agenda-less Boulder summer (beginning).
I know I wouldn’t be able to live this recklessly for much longer; it was the perfect stretch of rebellion from reality.  Not many kids get to do this stuff. My heart is full of love for the moments and the people I’m leaving behind but keeping close for the rest of my life.

So lucky and so thankful.

Dedicated to Annie and Connor Davis…two beautiful people that I love and who are some of the strongest people I know.

It would be Kevin’s 51st birthday today if they hadn’t lost their father to hurricane Irene.

Should I get nostalgic yet that I have a week left of living in the best little place in this whole town?
Here’s to 1044:
Getting to wake up to people who are laughing about our nights and planning our days.
Literally never having a dull moment around here.
Charlotte charging through the door with alcohol and baked goods.
Nathan striding in with his trendy work clothes on and his let’s-have-an-adventure-tonight attitude.
Gathering everyone to head over to Bryn’s to pre-game while Kristie begs to listen to one more Missy Elliot song on pandora radio.
Martha and I putting on weird outfits when we feel like it (sometimes making music videos).
Nights ending on the roof with Papa Romanos and spicy ranch.
My roommates hearing the usual morning noises of bags of cereal being opened and repoured several times.
Gabby making oats.
Martha doesn’t make things.
Kristie juicing and making potatoes or pasta.
The TV never working, the dishes never quite getting cleaned and of course the portal.
This has been the best living situation any college girl could ask for…love, e.
